Kenly is a small town where about two-thirds of the homes were built before 1980, and it runs its own wastewater plant on the Little River. Plumber Raleigh NC is a free service that connects callers with independent plumbers; it is not a plumbing company. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Kenly.

Plumbing services in Kenly
Kenly calls itself friendly, and at about 1,500 residents it's one of the smaller towns we cover. It sits at the northeast edge of Johnston County, with a small piece in Wilson County, about 32 miles from Raleigh in a straight line. US 301 runs through as Church Street, NC 222 as Second Street, and I-95 Exit 107 is at the edge of town. The 27542 ZIP reaches about 9,850 people across a lot of farmland.
Water: bought from the county
The Town of Kenly buys its water from Johnston County East, which draws on the Neuse River and also purchases bulk water from the City of Wilson, Sampson County and the Wayne Sanitary Districts. Both chlorine and chloramines appear in the 2025 report. Lead sampling that June found the 90th percentile not detected.
The same report lists violations for total trihalomethanes, a byproduct of disinfection, in the second and third quarters of 2025, at 86 ppb against an 80 ppb limit. That's a long-term average, not a short-term emergency, and the town's report explains it. A plumber can talk through filter options if you want one, but read the report first.
Outside town limits, the county's Princeton Kenly water district serves some homes, and others use private wells.
The town sewer plant
Kenly treats its own wastewater at a regional plant on Truck Stop Road that discharges to the Little River. In 2024 it was running at about 61% of its capacity. The collection system is small, roughly 2.5 miles of gravity sewer and 2.8 miles of force main with nine pump stations, and four overflows occurred during Tropical Storm Debby in August 2024. If your drains slow down in heavy rain while neighbors have the same trouble, let the town know as well as calling a plumber.
Older pipe is the norm
The median Kenly home was built in 1973, compared with 1997 in Raleigh. Expect cast iron or clay drain lines, older supply pipe and shutoff valves that haven't been turned in years. When one fitting fails in a house that age, it's reasonable to have the plumber look at the pipe on either side.
Permits and gas
Kenly's town code sends inspections to the county: Johnston County Inspections in Smithfield (919-989-5060), or Wilson County for the part of town on that side of the line. No backflow program was found for Kenly.
Both Johnston and Wilson counties fall in Piedmont Natural Gas territory. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or Piedmont at 800-752-7504 from outdoors.
