Plumbing services in Sanford
The Brick Capital
Sanford, incorporated as a city in 1874, is the seat of Lee County and sits about 36 miles from downtown Raleigh in a straight line, well outside Wake County. It grew as a railroad and industrial center and is known as the Brick Capital of the USA. US 1 (Hawkins Avenue), US 421 (Horner Boulevard) and US 15-501 run through it, and the Downtown Sanford and Rosemount-McIver Park historic districts and San-Lee Park are among its landmarks. The 2020 Census counted 30,261 residents.
Its housing is much older than in the Wake suburbs: the median home was built in 1985, and about 44% went up before 1980.
TriRiver Water
On July 1, 2024, City of Sanford Public Utilities became TriRiver Water, which now provides water and wastewater service to Sanford and Pittsboro; Siler City and most of Chatham County joined on July 1, 2025. Drinking water comes from the Cape Fear River. The water filtration facility is being expanded from 12 to 30 million gallons a day in partnership with Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, and the project adds granular activated carbon filters meant to remove contaminants including PFAS, with completion expected in 2028. Wastewater goes to the Big Buffalo plant, which discharges to the Deep River.
In August 2026, TriRiver issued a boil water advisory for the Oakleaf Road area after total coliform was detected, and lifted it after follow-up tests came back clear, according to the Sanford Herald. TriRiver is also running a lead service line identification effort with a lookup for each neighborhood's status, and it posts annual water quality reports on its website.
What older houses bring
With so many homes built before 1980, plumbing calls in Sanford often involve materials that have been in the walls a long time. Older houses can have galvanized steel supply lines that narrow inside and lower the pressure, cast iron drain pipe that cracks or scales, and shutoff valves that no longer close. A plumber working on an older home may suggest replacing a section rather than patching it, and checking the service line material is sensible while TriRiver's lead identification work continues.
Permits and gas
The City of Sanford / Lee County Inspections Division handles permits for Sanford, Broadway and the rest of Lee County, with applications online through its CSS Portal. Lee County's map data shows natural gas mains in the county; if you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
