Angier is a small Harnett County town whose water comes from Harnett Regional Water's Cape Fear River plant and whose natural gas comes from Piedmont Natural Gas rather than the Wake County utility. The Town of Crepe Myrtles
Angier sits in northern Harnett County, with a small portion in Wake, at the crossroads of NC 55 (Raleigh Street) and NC 210 (Depot Street), about 19 miles from downtown Raleigh in a straight line. Founded in the late 1880s, it calls itself the Town of Crepe Myrtles and holds a Crepe Myrtle Festival. The town had 5,265 residents in 2020, while its 27501 ZIP code reaches about 24,806. The historic Williams Grove School is on the National Register.
The housing is a mix. About 31% of homes in town were built before 1980, a much older core than in Holly Springs or Fuquay-Varina, with newer growth since 2000 bringing the median year to 1998.
Water and wastewater
The Town of Angier distributes water it buys from Harnett Regional Water, which treats Cape Fear River water at its plant in Lillington. It is disinfected with chloramine, averaging 2.79 ppm, and switched to chlorine only in March. The 2025 water quality report lists no violations, and lead was not detected in sampling from July through September 2025. The town has also finished an inventory of service line materials, which residents can view on its GIS map.
For sewer, Angier runs the collection lines and Harnett County's utility provides bulk wastewater treatment. Outlying parts of the ZIP may instead be on Harnett Regional Water directly or on private wells, so it is worth knowing which applies to your house.
How backflow works in Angier
Most homes have a dual check valve in the meter box. Higher-risk connections need a testable assembly, and testing and upkeep are the customer's job. Reports are due by the date on the town's notice and go to Backflow Solutions Inc. (BSI), not to Town Hall; the town stopped taking them directly in 2019.
Permits and gas
Building permits are applied for and paid at Angier Town Hall through Planning and Inspections, and inspections are scheduled by phone before 2 p.m. Harnett County is in Piedmont Natural Gas territory, according to the state utilities commission, though mains don't reach every street. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or Piedmont at 800-752-7504 once you're outside.
How Angier differs from Raleigh
Compared with a Raleigh home, an Angier house has a different water source, a different gas company, its own backflow reporting setup and a better chance of being older than 1980. Older homes can hide aging supply lines, worn shutoff valves and drain pipe that has been patched over the years. When you call the number on this page, tell the plumber roughly how old the house is and whether you're on town water. You'll be connected with an independent local plumber who covers Angier.
