The Nash County seat

Nashville, founded in 1780, is the seat of Nash County and sits just west of Rocky Mount, about 40 miles east-northeast of Raleigh in a straight line. The Nash County Courthouse and the Victorian and Queen Anne homes of the Nashville Historic District line the area around Washington Street, and Town Hall is on S. Barnes Street. The town had 5,632 residents in 2020.

A blended water supply

Town of Nashville Public Utilities runs the water system, but most of the water is bought from the City of Rocky Mount, which treats Tar River water. The rest comes from town wells; in 2023 the town produced about 20% and purchased about 80%. Because of the blend, the 2023 water report shows both chlorine and chloramine residuals, which is unusual. The 2023 lead and copper sampling found no sites over the action levels. The Town's water quality reports are on its website.

The Town maintains its sewer mains, 14 lift stations and the sewer laterals within town, and sewage is treated at Rocky Mount's Tar River Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Town's page doesn't say where responsibility for the water service line changes hands, so ask Public Utilities if a leak is near the meter.

In a 2024 state grant round Nashville received $1.5 million for water and wastewater fixes, and the town manager planned to recommend lining manholes and replacing many of the town's aging two-inch waterlines.

Backflow rules for irrigation and businesses

Nashville has its own cross-connection program, separate from Raleigh's. Industrial, commercial and irrigation customers need a backflow permit and an assembly installed before the private plumbing branches off. Tests are annual, and reports are filed through BSI Online, which mails a notice 32 days before a test is due. The Town says there is a $16.95 filing fee per report, in place since March 1, 2023.

Houses, gas and wells

The median Nashville home was built in 1993, and about 28% are older than 1980, mostly in and around the historic district. About 11% of homes in ZIP 27856 heat with utility gas, 22% with propane and 67% with electricity. Piedmont Natural Gas holds the Nash County territory, and Rocky Mount's city gas system also serves customers in the county; we couldn't confirm which one serves a given Nashville address. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.

Outside town limits, service depends on the address, and some homes use private wells. Nash County well testing found manganese above the EPA health advisory in about 29% of tested wells.

Permits and calling

The Town issues zoning certificates; Nash County Planning and Inspections, on W. Washington Street in Nashville, handles building and trade permits. Call, describe the problem, and you'll be connected with an independent local plumber who sets the visit and price with you.
